Amigos

In our small barrio we have met some of the most wonderful people.  People we will stay connected with throughout the remainder of our lives.  We have developed true  friendships – the kind where they just pop up at your house to hang out – no  invitation needed. We had friends like that in the states (and we miss them like crazy!), but here it has been more difficult to find heart friends.  Why?  At first we didn’t know Spanish well, so that was an obvious barrier.  I also think being here as “missionaries” put a flashing light above our heads.  It’s unfortunate, but many missionaries will enter a place and try to convince people they need to become more like them. i.e. wear certain clothes and don’t wear others, fix your hair a certain way, do this, but don’t do that.  We have always had the mentality that God would change the things that need changed and we are going to live a transparent, authentic life.

Some of our new friends live just a few houses away.  Robert and Cody both have a love for fishing and he was the first one to invite Cody to hunt lobsters at night with a water pistol.  Swimming with crocodiles and/or sharks at night would freak me out, but not Cody.  I love my manly man.  As you may or may not know, I also love to fish.  One of the many things that Cody loved about me when we first met.  Haha!  Many women don’t fish and I don’t enjoy being the “only female” so I usually stay behind.  Luckily, Robert’s wife Rudy is a fisherwoman.  So, as couples (with our small daughters) we get to hang out and fish every once in a while.  Then we usually have a big dinner and enjoy the day’s catch.

Kyah and Ester ready to roll.

We took the boat down a back river that comes off the ocean. These trees lined both sides of almost the entire thing.

One of Cody's fish.

Robert cleaning some of the fish. We caught 11 that day!

FINALLY getting to swim!

…is crazy!  We live only a few miles from one of the coolest waterfalls I’ve ever seen in person.  Sure, Niagara Falls might have us beat, but you can’t swim in the Falls.

We can climb up to three different pools of water to either swim, slide, or jump.  The entire thing is probably 20-30 meters high.  It’s a fun place to hang out as a family and just enjoy God’s creation.

Check out these videos to see what I mean about my crazy man.

I’m not trying to brag, but…

…our backyard is pretty legit.  Thanks to our abundance of fruit trees we have some pretty incredible looking creatures that live in our yard.

On this day there were about 10 macaws in one almond tree.  These Fruit Loop beauties can tear through the husk of an almond in seconds…something that takes us several minutes and a knife.

We have several iguanas like this one that hang out in our mango trees.  Big Daddy hollered at me to come see this fella that was stuck on the fence.  It couldn’t get down because the neighbor’s crazy dogs were trying to get it.  The hubby tried to help him, but got whipped with its long tail.  Ha.  Ha.  Unfortunately, the dogs won after a few hours and enjoyed a nice juicy lunch.  I may or may not have cried.

Just like in the midwest, squirrels are everywhere.  The squirrels here eat coconuts.

We can hear them ripping the coconut open and then the squirrel’s little head disappears inside while he drinks in that goodness. Have you ever tried fresh coconut water?  It’s not too shabby.  The locals live off of it.

Almost 2 months ago we bought our little girl a bunny.  Kyah named her Honey Pie Pony while we were still at the feed store. They were inseparable.  Then the bunny died.  There’s no pretty way to say it.  She got sick, we took her to the vet, and a few hours later she died.  It was awful.  Kyah painted her a box “like a rainbow” and placed her inside.  Tears flowed. Big Daddy dug a hole under the banana trees.  When the time came to put the box in the hole, she couldn’t do it.  She shook her sweet little head and just sobbed. She took Honey Pie Pony back out of the box and just held her tight.  Kyah loved pulling the bunny’s little mouth apart to look at her teeth and she tried several times, but they wouldn’t budge.  She was convinced Honey Pie was okay because her eyes were open.  It was just terrible.  We finally finished burying her and Kyah requested to go speak with her friend, Elias.  She wanted to tell him about her bunny.  When we got home it was raining.  After a brief convo between Big Daddy and Kyah, my little bit went to her room, put on her rainboots, got a spoon, and walked outside.  I asked her what she was doing and she said daddy told her that Honey Pie wasn’t sick anymore, so she was going to get her because she wanted to hold her.  It broke my heart.  I told her the only thing I knew to say, that Honey Pie had gone to Heaven.  She replied with “She didn’t go to Heaven mommy, she’s over there. Can I go get her?”  She cried herself to sleep that night telling me “Jesus doesn’t love me that much anymore” and “I just miss my bunny”.

The next morning was our Kid’s Club.  While Cody and I were shuffling stuff across the street to the plaza, I noticed Kyah in the backyard with a couple friends, shovel in hand, digging up Honey Pie Pony.  I rushed over to see what she was doing and to spare her from the “reality” she might discover.  She looked at me with the most sincere eyes and said “Mom, I’m just going to show them that Honey Pie isn’t in her box anymore because she went to Heaven.”

We began discussing what to do next and she decided she would like another bunny.  She was set on getting another black bunny with a white nose.  I asked her what she would name it and she quickly said “Honey Pie Pony”.  Then she began sobbing and told me “I just miss my bunny”.  This kind of parenting isn’t very fun.  I hate to see my baby girl suffer.  Please pray for her precious heart.

These little Halloween Crabs have decided our home is more comfortable than the hundreds of holes they have been digging in our yard.  Does anyone know a good recipe for crab cakes?
